Visit Aliwal Shoal, Umkomaas for some of the most exciting dives to be experienced in South Africa. Enjoy sharks in their abundance at close range. Aliwal Shoal is famous for hard and soft corals, warm and cold water reef fish, sharks, turtles, whales, rays, moray eels, sponges and most especially as the dive site where divers can safely swim with the spotted ragged tooth shark between June and November. There are two wrecks; The Nebo and The Produce.

Umkomaas
Being a small town, Umkomaas has distinct advantages ; friendly, atmospheric, all facilities very close by and safe for travelers. It is a perfect gateway to the South Coast, and is situated only 45 minutes from Durban, and 25 minutes from the airport. Aliwal Shoal Restaurants
Umkomaas has a handful of restaurants, with a friendly vibe, and being a small town, there are no great distances to cover. Meals are of a high standard, with friendly and vibey atmospheres.

Aliwal Shoal Tour Operators
For the overseas traveller with no transportation, there are a variety of tours that can be taken from Umkomaas, especially when the weather is bad, or in the afternoons when diving for the day is finished. Tours can be for the afternoon, or for a full day, visiting Durban City, Nature Reserves, Oribi Gorge on the South Coast, to the Drakensberg Mountains, Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Park, or to any of the KwaZulu Natal game reserves, St Lucia, Zulu cultural villages, and Anglo-Zulu War Battlefields. Many other destinations can be included.

Aliwal Shoal Dive Charters
There are varied dive charters available in Umkomaas, Aliwal Shoal, so you are almost guaranteed of a dive or two every day, even if just one person. Dives cost R140.00 per dive, including an air refill, and equipment hire costs R150.00 per day. All dive charters utilised have excellent facilities and equipment.

Golf
Umkomaas, Aliwal Shoal has it's own golf course, and what can be better than enjoying a sunny afternoon on the links after diving in the morning. Reasonable green fees and equipment hire can easily be arranged.

Horse Riding
Horse riding over scenic farmland, or on the beaches can be arranged at R75.00 per hour. Highly recommended.

Nature Reserves
Spend a night in the beautiful Empisini Nature Reserve in rustic tree houses or cabins, or just visit for a wonderful day. There are picnic sites, excellent birding, hiking trails, and 50 hectares of pristine coastal forest. Streams, waterfalls and stunning vistas are all found at Empisini. Mammals include monkey, mongoose, bushuck, blue duiker, otter, bushpig, bats and more. All that nature provides for an excellent rate of R30.00pppn. For backpackers, who could ask more, especially as Empisini is only 1.5kms away from Umkomaas, and the Aliwal Shoal.
