Shamwari Game Reserve Activities

Wildlife
Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard - The Big 5, are very frequently seen on safari
at Shamwari private game reserve, as well as a large range of smaller mammals and birdlife. If there is a particular species you want to see, speak to your guide and he (or she) most often will be able to track the animal you have an interest in.

Twice-daily game-drives
Shamwari guests are taken on modern Land Rovers converted into perfect open game viewing vehicles. Each vehicle has a trained ranger who will increase your enjoyment with his knowledge of both the flora and fauna. The rangers are in 2-way communication with each other at all times, so on any day they know where the game is, and how to find the elusive animals such as the rare Black Rhino, and sought after lion sightings.

Game & Bush Walks
Learn more about the traditional uses and the legends surrounding indigenous trees and shrubs, as well as how to identify tracks and see rare birds on walks led by armed rangers and trackers. There is nothing more exciting than seeing wild game on a walk. Every animal found in a game park is ten times more impressive when seen on foot.

Shamwari Day Centre
Located in the southern area of Shamwari, the Day centre has become an international sanctuary for African animal species which are often exploited in captivity around the world. The centre incorporates a museum and educational facility, and is a must see for visitors to Shamwari.

Kyaha Lendaba traditional village
A traditional African Arts & Culture village, located in the southern area of Shamwari Game Reserve. Visitors learn about the culture, the healing methods, traditional rituals and art found in modern African life, as well as absorbing the dramatic history and vibrant dancing of the Xhosa people and other prominent tribes in Southern Africa. There are many customs that guests will find fascinating, including initiation ceremonies, and the tradition of the groom paying Lobola (bride price) to the family of the bride, which ensures a husbands long-lived respect for his wife. The tribe still find the Sangoma (traditional healer) invaluable.
